4.11 CURRICULUM - DOCTORAL STUDIES OF TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES

According to a university senate decision from January, 29th 2004, doctoral studies of technological sciences were introduced in accordance with article 25, paragraph 1, section 10 of the Universities Act 2002, BGBl. I Nr. 120/2002 at the University of Applied Arts after positive responses from the rectorate and the university council with the following curriculum.

GOALS AND INSTITUTION

Article 1
The doctoral studies of technological sciences has in addion to article 51, paragraph (2), section 12 of the Universities Act 2002 about preparatory scientific training, the goal to develop the ability to carry out independent scientific research as well as to educate and promote a new generation of academics on the basis of diploma and master studies.

ADMISSION

Article 2
Admission to the study is granted by the principal and has in addition to the general prerequisites according to article 64 of the Universities Act 2002 the following requirements:
1. completion of a relevant diploma or master's program,
2. completion of a program at a comparable domestic or foreign institution of post-secondary education equivalent to the aforementioned programs or
3. completion of a relevant program at a university of applied sciences according to article 5 paragraph 3 of the Fachhochschule Studies Act.


OUTLINE OF STUDY

Article 3
(1) The doctoral studies of technological sciences consist of one term and are comprised of 120 ECTS credits.
(2) if admission is granted after a relevant program at a university of applied sciences according to article 2 section 3, courses equivalent to 40 credits must be passed in addition to the compulsory credits according to article 4 clause. (1) lit. a.

COURSES AND CREDITS

Article 4
(1) During the doctoral studies courses with a total of 12 credits, equalling 24 ECTS credits, must be passed:
a) 6 credits from the field the dissertation is dealing with (required course) and
b) 4 credits from a field which must be chosen by the candidate with regards to thematic accordance with the dissertation (elective).

c) 2 credits from subjects related to philosophy of science/art, art theory or humanities (electives)

(2) The name of the course and the course credits according to article 4 are determined individually by the supervising tutor in accordance with the topic of the dissertation and in agreement with the candidate. The dean of studies decides upon the admissibility of the student's choice. The topic has to be presented to the dean in written form by the end of the 2nd term. Further, approval on the part of the supervising tutor has to be proved.
(3) Examinations that have been taken at comparable domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institutions and scientific work in companies or extra-faculty research facilities (article 78 of the Universities Act 2002) can be approved by the dean, if they are equal to required examinations listed in article 4 section (2).

DISSERTATION

Article 5
(1)For the doctoral program a dissertation, showing the student's ability to work on scientific problems, has to be written, 96 ECTS points being accredited to the dissertation. The topic of the dissertation can be taken from an examination subject in the curriculum of the completed course of studies or has to bear a meaningful relation to one of these subjects.
(2) The dean of studies must be notified by the student about the topic of the dissertation in written form before the student begins working on the dissertation. A change of the supervising tutor is permitted until submission of the dissertation.
